USD 232 was thrilled to welcome Katie Ledecky, the most decorated American female Olympian in history, to Cedar Trails Exploration Center and Mill Creek Middle School as part of a special day celebrating STEAM and real-world learning.

Ledecky’s visit gave students from CTEC CAPS (Cedar Trails Exploration Center, Center for Advanced Professional Studies) and Mill Creek Middle School an incredible opportunity to connect with an inspiring leader while highlighting the innovative programs and experiences available in USD 232. From bioscience to design and automation, our students showcased the skills and creativity that set them apart in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) fields.

“It is so exciting to share my own experiences in STEAM fields and education with students in USD 232 and see how they already excel in robotics, biomedical engineering, and STEAM competitions,” said Ledecky.

This event was made possible through the district’s collaboration with Panasonic, whose partnership has helped bring new opportunities to students and supports the mission to provide authentic, hands-on learning.

“Our teachers and support staff are on a mission every day to inspire students to explore a world of possibility, creativity, and learning,” said Dr. Cory Gibson, Superintendent of Schools for USD 232. “When partners like Panasonic and inspiring individuals such as Katie Ledecky engage with our students, it can spark that pivotal moment of inspiration—a moment that could empower a student to one day change the world.”

During her time with USD 232, Katie Ledecky:

  • Toured the Design, Automation, Manufacturing, Engineering, and Robotics programs at CTEC CAPS and connected with student ambassadors.
  • Joined Biomedical Innovations students for hands-on lab experiences.
  • Met with the Make48 Women in STEM student team to hear about their invention.
  • Participated in a Q&A with 6th grade Mill Creek Middle School Pathway students.

The day concluded with a fireside chat at Mill Creek Middle School, where Ledecky shared her perspective on leadership, perseverance, and the importance of pursuing excellence in academics.

As a four-time Olympian, 23-time World Champion, and 14-time Olympic medalist, Ledecky connects her personal story of discipline, goal setting, and perseverance with the skills needed to succeed in science and technology fields. Those same qualities were evident throughout her day with USD 232 as she engaged with students, asked thoughtful questions about their projects, and encouraged them to see how the lessons they’re learning today can shape their future paths. Her presence reinforced the message that hard work and persistence open doors—not only in athletics, but also in the classrooms, labs, and innovation spaces where our students are already making their mark.

Thank you to Panasonic for partnering with USD 232 and supporting our mission to provide students with hands-on learning experiences. This collaboration helps our students explore real-world applications, imagine exciting future careers, and connect with inspiring role models who encourage them to dream big and reach their full potential.
